I am a Catholic seminarian, basically meaning I am studying to be a Catholic priest. I, at one time, was an extremely well respected and known member on FK and for anonymity purposes have created a new account.
Ask me any questions you may have. I will try to respond to all of them.
RE: I am a Catholic seminarian; I was a very respected member on FK. Ask my anything!
With all the contradictions of logic, mixings of Paganism, and the bloody history of the Catholic Church, how can you be Catholic and not be disgusted with yourself and what you believe?
Yes this is a "pointed" questions, so to speak. I was raised Catholic so I know a lot of the "party-line" answers to this.

1.) So if I rape a girl but pay the father she will become my wife?
2.)Also Divorce is a horrible sin and is punished in full by god but being gay isn't punished so does that mean people who are gay won't be punished by god while people who get divorces will?
3.) How do you explain the ten commandments being made 500 years before moses by a greek lawmaker?

I can understand why you would want to be anonymous. It is quite embarassing to take on the title of a "Catholic," for many reasons. Not quite sure why you do, probably brainwashed as a kid before you could function what logic, reason and rationality are. Its never too late to join the light side, you know.
My questions for you are:
Do you accept the fact that is evolution? Do you accept that divine intervention of your god does not occur for the better sake of man? Do you accept the harm religion has caused?
And by accept, I mean acknowledge, understand and admit. We'll start with that.
Edit: So many valuable questions are going to be ignored because idiots will poison the thread with unintelligent remarks. Mark my word.

Give an example of a contradiction of logic in the Church. All priests have degrees in Philosophy, I doubt after going through that education they would continue onto a life of no sex if there were logical problems.
Mixings of paganism are ways to bridge gaps between the cultures of Christianity and converts to it. Yes, Christmas was not the exact day Jesus was born. It was timed around a pagan holiday, so that those who had grown up with that holiday would not receive that much of a culture shock.
Answer about bloody history below.

I could leave whenever I want. I'm not brainwashed, I have chosen Catholicism for my own.

I'm a theistic evolutionist. I'm not a Bible thumping fundamentalist who thinks they world was made in six literal days and that dinosaurs don't exit. Science and religion don't have to contradict. Modern genetics, the big bang theory, and many other scientific discoveries were made by Catholic priests and monks.
Divine intervention still does occur, just not on the scale that it has in the past. I personally, when praying over people, have startlingly accurate insights to that person's personal life and receive advice to give them; it's called the charism of words of wisdom. Miracles that prove beyond a shadow of a doubt the existence of God don't happen because that would force people's free will. You have to choose to love and believe in God, it can't be forced.
The harm people have done in the name of religion is awful, yes. It's a shame people claim that their God tells them to destroy another people. Catholicism has never taught to kill another people for not believing in God. All bloodbaths Catholicism has been accused of can be attributed to bad men in charge, not the institution itself. You cannot blame democracy for the drone bombings, you blame the people in charge: Obama, Bush, etc.

Exodus can be taken as literal or as figurative. It was written during the Babylonian exile by exiled Israelites elders, not during the Hellenistic period as you say. I believe the writings were inspired by God, but Moses did not necessarily receive a literal stone with ten commandments written on them.
That's most of them I think. Keep 'em coming! If you have any questions about seminary or other stuff, not necessarily "why are you religious you ignorant fundie" I'll welcome those as well.

I'm not talking about just Christmas, all the Catholic holidays are based on Pagan harvest and planting festivals. The one on the Winter Solstice being called Saturnalia by the Romans. What you call Easter was once known as Hilaria, a Roman celebration of planting and fertility. Ever wondered where the Easter Bunny came from? Right here.
The Pope is worshiped, on a daily basis, yet "Thou shall not have any false gods before me."
How can 1 man be 3 people while maintaining sanity?

The Pope isn't worshiped, he is just held in high regard as God's representative on Earth. I could say some people worship Obama or other high level officials as well. Also atheists seem to worship him as we'll, I can't go on reddit without seeing an atheist comment "I'm atheist but I love this pope".
Well, to start you've got the doctrine wrong One God, three different people, one of them is a man and God at the same time. It's a concept out human minds cannot understand and is one of the few things in the Church that require faith to believe and not just reason.
Also He's God. That's how. Aristotle actually believed that God had to be somewhat like the trinity in order for him to maintain sanity!

I'm catholic and I'm not embarrassed to say it. I accept all the things you've stated. Everyone has their own religion/beliefs. I don't see why it's looked down upon? There's no need to bash on a religion (Catholicism in this case).
