Market Forums and thousands more were hacked.. - Archived by George

Well as you know I possibly have the worst luck in the world. Anyway, Hostgator (the largest host in the United Kingdom, maybe in the world :O) was rooted. Well, one of their 5k servers were rooted. We were on that server of thousands of websites which were defaced and redirected to a hacking website.

I took a backup today when we reached 6k posts and we've currently restored that. Today wasn't really that active for posts, we only lost around 50-70 posts and maybe 6 signups, but I know some of them are going to be annoyed about signing up again.

At the moment every 2 hours I'll be taking backups due to my luck, but this will mean we won't have anymore mass-data losses. It was thanks to Spaz (close friend) who has all the necessary details like FTP, Cpanel who stopped the redirecting fast and put a simple message on a blank index.php page. So thanks the the fast-thinking Spaz, we didn't have many many guests/members redirected to a very blackhat site.

I've reported the issue to Hostgator, and the support members supervisor is now looking into it. I apologize once again to any members who will need to re-sign up, but to the rest of you this won't have affected you apart from a few posts.

You're telling me. How many sites have I owned which have been hacked or screwed by hosts that you've been apart of? Countless amounts.

It's all changing now though, I've learnt to be way more organized.

This wasn't a host fail. Hostgator doesn't fail, it's the #1 host in the UK and has 5000 servers and has won too many awards. It's literally this new exploit called "0 Day" which is getting passed pretty much all servers. Hostgator will probably fix this very soon, not all of their servers were hackable. Which is rare.

The site who hacked us and the many others has 20,000 hits at the moment, I'm not going to release it but yeah a lot of sites were effected.

Method? No method, lol. Simply going into cPanel, then "backups", then downloading a full website backup.

Good call man we got the same kind a luck i guess lol but hey do that because then people going to leave the forum because every minute they have to signup.

Crayo, It would be a good idea, in my opinion if you pay for offserver backups from HostGator as a service (if they do it) on a regular basis, sure you can do it, but it's just an idea as there's always going to be a time when you can't do it for whatever reason.

Funny you should suggest that actually, I was planning on asking them that tonight when I got time to have a conversation with one of their reps. I doubt a big host like Hostgator would offer that service though, as they already produce weekly backups of all their sites, but it's something I can ask.
