Just because it's be suggested previously doesn't mean that it wasn't a good idea.

If I'm not mistaken I believe last time it was suggested, it was suggested for all RG Elites and Sponsors.

The difference between RG Elite and Sponsor is very miniscule.

I agree with you. Give @runegear.net emails is a fairly simple process but it really depends on the verification method used. Some can be quite a pain to do.
