Simón Bolívar was born on July 24th, 1783 in Caracas, Venezuela. His full name is Simón José Antonio de la Santísma Trinidad Bolívar y Palacios. He born into a wealthy family. When he was 16 years old he moved to Spain. He was educated in Spain and late got married to a woman named María Teresa. Later on, she died of yellow fever. In 1807, Simón moved back to Venezuela. He joined the resistance movement. Bolívar traveled to Britain on a diplomatic mission. He fought for the control of Caracas, Venezuela and most of South America. Bolívar returned back to Venezuela to gain back complete control from the Spanish. On May 14, 1813, Bolívar and his followers invaded Venezuela. He was hailed as El Libertador. Which stands for The Liberator. In 1824, he was named Dictator of Peru and in 1825, the country Bolivia was named after him. Even though Bolívar united most of South America, the government was weak. He couldn’t fix the government so he made plans to sail for exile in Europe. On December 17, 1830, Simón Bolívar died in Santa Marta, Colombia, after a battle with tuberculosis. Today, Simón Bolívar’s legacy can be seen by multiple statues all around South America. In America, some cities and towns share his last name.
