Find a host that'll take a credit card, I'll buy the hosting for you.

$5-10 is a reasonable price, anything over is really pro.

For $5 - $10 you are going to get a linux VPS with 128 -512MB RAM

Enough to run a forum.

A forum of this size requires 1GB, or more.

You're an idiot.

You can run a forum with 500+ active members 248MB of RAM.
It doesn't matter the size of the forums, it is the amount of connections at any given times.
Marketforums has no where near 500 active members during normal posting conditions.

No, it doesn't. No where near 1GB is needed.

You could easily run a forum of this size with 252MB of RAM. The member number doesn't matter when finding a host, it is the amount of members that are online connecting to the servers.

Wonder why my old forum with 256MB that was a little smaller than this with 100MBit connection lagged.

Good luck Crayo I have been in this situation before, wish you the best. But I must admit hostgator sucks ass bro. They are known to be trigger happy, keep exceeding your limits and they will suspend you. My forum is hosted on Hawkhost and is on the shared server. IM on the standard plan there http://www.hawkhost.com/Shared/compare if you know www.forumpromotion.net they are one of the biggest forums and to let you know they too are hosted by hawkhost and are on the same plan as me, and are not on a VPS. VPS is not a need, its a want. Depends from host to host, and hawkhost is great. If you dont believe me ask the people over at forumpromotion.
Hmm that's very interesting. I'd need to get in contact with them and find out the max_user_connections limit, but I do think eventually a VPS is a better solution. Due to the fact you have a bit more control. But if Shared Hosting can meet our needs and is a cheaper price I'd be more than happy to.

@Lith: That's a very good gesture, I'll get in contact with you if it comes to that :).

Let's keep this topic flame free please.

Edit: One piece of advice I received from someone who owns a board with nearly 1 million posts (mybb) is to get a cloud server https://www.stormondemand.com/cloud-server/.

The cost I'm looking at if I went and got one of those is $60 a month. The Elite (good friend, owner of runegear.net) said he would host us on his VPS which would more likely be around $15 per month, but when he's on MSN I talk about the specifics that MF will get to see if it's worth it. Difficult decisions ahead.

Do you host the domain elsewhere?

RE: We could be in a very sticky situation.

I was just curious as to if you would pay for the domain again, like pay for a webhost that gives you a free domain.

Talk to Alex, he knows a brilliant VPS that is cheap, I used it for my site, but then moved back to Shared.

Shit, that's bad. I don't think I've ever gotten that error though.

I'd really donate but all I have is $4 in PayPal, hope everything works out.

Just spoke to Dreamhost and they allow 300 user connections. Think this could be a good bet.

300 is pretty decent. Hopefully, you buy it.

You could try ShockingHost for a VPS. It's managed by a support team member on the official MyBB forums (Connor Calby) and it's been going for quite a while now. $12.50 per month for 25gb space, 750gb bandwidth, 512mb guaranteed ram, 1024mb burstable ram and 2 dedicated ip addresses.
