Each country has a national hero that serves as inspiration to their people. The Philippines 's National Hero is DR. Jose Protacio Mercado Rizal. His two great novels, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo ignited the revolution against Spanish Colonization that lead to the country's independence. He is a peaceful man who believed in the power of the pen,and a great advocate of non-violence revolution. Rizal is not only a man of peace but also of literary genius, an inventor, a doctor,a agriculturist and a lover of beauty and women. He spoke 22 kind of languages and considered the Great Malayan. Who is your country's National Hero and what make him/her a hero?

That seems pretty interesting, so does this thread. In Australia, I don't find anyone a 'national hero', but I'd love to see some Aussies reply to this thread, it would be a good read, and definitely quite interesting.

DR. Jose Protacio Mercado Rizal, I've never heard of this person, but he sure seems kind. It's great that he made 2 novels, I will read them soon, if I can. 22 Languages?! You've got to be kidding me, that's insane! (In a great way). That's something I envy, also an inventor, doctor, agriculturist, and a lover of beauty/women. The first 3, they make me want to meet him. He also seems very inspiring, and caring.

We are from the same country. It's Dr. Jose P. Rizal. He has done many great things for the country and has monuments not only in his native country but also in different parts of the world. We all look up to our national hero and his life and works are part of the curriculum in school.

I am from the Philippines, too. We have just commemorated Dr. Jose Rizal's 150th birthday last June 19, 2011. He had all the chances in the world to change his citizenship but he never did and chose to die for the Philippines and for all the Filipinos. He was a man of peace and used the power of the pen to expose all the atrocities of the Spanish regime being done to the Filipinos at that time.
