I started with VB, then taught myself what I could of C++, then finally was able to take an actual computer science class in Java. Maybe it's because I took a class, but I much rather Java. It's relatively easy to learn the basics, implementing new libraries is easy, and compiled apps are, normally, platform independent.

Good Luck

I think C# is much better, because it's easier. But java is more flexible as you can release web applications all the user requires is Java and as for desktop apps the user needs to download the app. But lots of security issues arrise with java. So do some research mate.

The .NET platform as a whole has not been standardized... And the primary implementation of the Java platform is available as an Open Source! So, like @ITzzJake i'll say Java.
